What is Revision Rhinoplasty (Secondary Rhinoplasty)?
This operation is performed to eliminate the undesirable results of the previous rhinoplasty (rhinoplasty) surgery. The procedure is called revision rhinoplasty (correction rhinoplasty). It is also referred to as “Secondary Rhinoplasty”. Unfortunately, rhinoplasty surgery does not result in a positive result in every patient. In such cases, 5-15% revision (correction) surgery is required after primary rhinoplasty (primary rhinoplasty). These rates are taken from the data presented by the publications about the results of rhinoplasty in our country and in the world.
Rates may vary according to the experience of the surgeon and the difficulty of the nose in the first surgery. Revisions are divided into minor and major. In minor revision; the result of the first surgery is acceptable. However, small rotations are still required. The patient is happy with his current nose and general appearance. However, it may require minor corrections for a more flawless look. However, the procedure performed on patients with significant deformity as a result of previous rhinoplasty surgery is major revision. Minor revisions are often completed in a 30-40 minute period. However, major revisions may take 3-6 hours depending on the scope of the surgery.
Why Is Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery More Difficult?
Revision surgery is slightly different from primary surgery. Tissue plans are often narrowed, and the cartilage and bone tissues that are very valuable to us have been removed in an excessive or asymmetrical way. However, during healing, weak or weakened cartilage is bent. This situation necessitates longer and more careful work during surgery. Skin and soft tissue revision are of great importance in rhinoplasty.
Most often a scar may form on the skin. Revision rhinoplasty has more inflammatory tissue than primary rhinoplasty. In addition, the nasal septum cartilage is usually insufficient because it will have been used in the previous surgery. The fact that normal anatomical structures are deformed and incomplete makes revision surgeries more difficult. At this point, the experience and patience of the surgeon is the most effective factor in the smooth and successful outcome of the operation. Moreover, even when everything is done properly in revision surgery, the healing response of the existing tissues and skin is effective in monitoring the results.
