Voice diseases can be classified into two groups as organic and functional causes. Organic causes are problems that we can list some examples of such as nodules, polyps, cysts, grooves (sulcus), granulomas, reflux, paralysis, white and red spots, and cancer in the vocal folds. Functional causes are those in which no visual problem is seen in the sound folds and ear nose throat examination, but the problem is determined with the use of the relevant structures of the individual.

How is the Correct Diagnosis Made in Voice Diseases?

For an accurate diagnosis, an Otolaryngologist should examine your vocal cords. For this, it is necessary to visualize with an endoscope. Sound folds vibrate an average of 100-140 times per second in adult males during sound removal. Since it vibrates 200-240 times in women, special instruments are needed to see these structures. The light technology used for this is called stroboscopy. Voice examination performed under a stroboscopic light source is the main diagnostic method. In this way, a lot of information that cannot be obtained by simple examination methods can be reached. As a result, a definitive diagnosis can be made.

Can Reflux Trigger Voice Diseases?

Reflux, which is seen since childhood and adversely affects the quality of life, is one of the most common diseases. It is especially triggering in people who work in stressful jobs, stay sedentary, and consume coffee and tea intensively. However, it affects individuals who eat incorrectly and have the habit of eating late at night. Reflux laryngitis; In addition to hoarseness, it manifests itself with complaints such as burning, squeaking, snagging-foreign body sensation in the throat, and the accumulation of sticky fluid in the throat.

Depending on the reflux, there may be edema extending from the bottom of the vocal cords downwards, that is, tissue swelling, development or the development of edema that occurs along the length of the vocal cords. Depending on the payment instead, it can also lead to the formation of a false groove just below the vocal cords. In addition, you can notice bud-shaped tissue in the back part of the vocal cords. Because of reflux, thick, sticky secretion can form in and around the larynx.

Can Voice Disease Be Treated with Only Voice Therapy?

Surgical methods are used in the treatment of many voice disorders. However, the treatment of some voice disorders can only be achieved with voice therapy.
